Travelin' Young
Denmark
Приєднався 17 сер 2020
Hey!! We are the Youngs - Joshua, Miranda, Maya, and the recently added Brisket. We sold our house, our cars, and packed the rest up and moved from Chicago, IL *USA* to Copenhagen, Denmark in 2018. Now that we are mostly settled in, we decided we'd start sharing our experiences as Americans living in Denmark. Check out our adventures, thanks for watching!
Differences between a US and a Danish Home
We recently uploaded a video showing differences in our Danish home to what we are used to in the US. This time I am in my parents home in the US and I walk through to show some differences from the other side of the ocean!

Thomas Sowell has a good YT video on some of the surprising unpleasant affects of a minimum wage. That not withstanding there are some neo-marxist states e.g. California, Washington and DC that have minimum wage that are substantially higher (nearly $20/hr) than the federal minimum. I admit that if one is in the bottom 10-20 percent of earners than a socialist/marxist economy may be more advantageous but most will prefer being treated like an adult not be satisfied with the state dispersing a small allowance.
guess I would include gun laws, but thats perhaps because I live in a part of the world where we dont have mass shootings all the time, actually never. Guess its just me forgetting the time difference, always set the clock some 200 years back when travelling from the civilized part of the world to the USA...
I am Portuguese/Danish and always been proud and happy about the Danish healthcare system. However I recently visited Portugal and my brother had bicycle accident, I was actually surprised how good the whole process worked in terms of getting him to the hospital and taken care off. So, it makes me happy to state that Europe seems to be catching up when it comes to general healthcare. Denmark is still exceptional though.
Hope they come back to Denmark, for a longer stay :D
We are all raised with not wearing a hat when dinning it’s not polite. Many men has been in the military and you’re learned not to wear hats indoors. Also look at Danish men, if they have been in the military the always carry bags in left hand, because right hand is for saluting and defending yourself 😉
This channel is dead...
Nah, I’ve got stuff in the works. Just need regular life to slow down a little bit to get stuff done :).
Free healthcare for all like in denmark is a Big problem imo
We also haved it the US way, 30-40 Years ago 😂
Ha ha ha (evil 👿laugh). We'll probably make Danes of you yet 😂😂😂 ! But please keep your Americanism 👍 ❤👍 ! Big part of who you are 😍
my hands down favorite rule is having to turn the cross upside down if you kiss someone of the same gender... That stem school thing with dark blue, looked like a satanic cult lol
I hope that your parents come back :D ./waves
If someone was groping her in Denmark, someone was very lucky to stay in one piece, we don't hold back on punishing that kind of behaveour, because he is not carrying a gun here? Age of consent is 15 in Denmark :)
Maya is a dramaqueen and a over pampere kid who likes to take the limelight. She is an adult. She ackts like a baby.
You are a blast, thanks for sharing your positive vibes!
Its em footballtime where are you and your daughters students celebration looking forward too see all the students in your garden love Claus.
We had canals with hot air as central heating, Called "Calorifere" heating 100 years ago. They have all been replaced with radiators under the windows. The reason were tha bacterias in the canals. And the stench! from the contaminated air inside the canals. The radiators under the windows provide with the best airflow inside the room. No air condition have been of interest in the Temperate climate up til now. Floor heating has been ditched also because of no air cirkulation in the room and getting "Elephant feet" walking the floor. The refrigirator with "Ice" exists in Denmark. My pal had a Samsung freedge so called American freedge, just like the one you show.
Hi, nice to meet you.
I found the good Jif peanut butter in a Normal store a while ago. Keep an eye out for it. 🙂 P.S. I miss you guys! I hope you go back to posting videos more frequently soon. 🙂
Matador is amazing 😊 You should also watch Badehotellet ❤
Actually Smørrebrød does not mean Butter Bread, because Smørre does not mean butter. Smør is butter. In this case to smørre, means to spread something onto something else, so for instance, spread leverpostej on bread... or spread butter or lard on bread and then continue to spread other goodies.... just wanted to correct the misunderstanding.... Your pronunciacion of Smørrebrød is impressive, it is not the easiest word for foreigners...Bravo... ;-)
Happy to have you here :D
We are extremely proud of our new King, his Majesty King Frederik! He has proven that he is a real man, was in maritime special operations force, master of science (political science) (same university where my son studies now :D), Expedition Sirius 2000 participant, and so much more! We admire our new Queen her Majesty Queen Mary! She has surprised and impressed us in so many ways!!
Miranda! wow that is actually impressive! Nice :D Whole family feels very danish! :) Thank you for embracing my country! oh yes, danish fathers to very atractive daughters, invest in a big, strong stick called a "knortekæp" to keep boys at bay! :D
Unfinished floor is not an universal european thing I'd say - more a nordic thing. I have never seen an unfinished floor before coming to DK 10 years ago (coming from France). It is "treated" with soap though, so not fully raw in that sense. About the switches to turn on plugs, they are not mandatory anymore since many years though can still be found on older installations as you pointed out. I think it was deemed necessary due to safety reasons.
Thank you so much, you guys, are so great! Proud to have you living here!! :D
OMG lol you really don't get that part of danish culture :D the journey around the "little stores" is a big part of being danish, and we love it, hahaha. you still are very very american - also Denmark is a coastal country were most of us eat what is locally produced - especially fish! YUMM!! And also a reason why we live longer than americans!
It is seen as a wasteful installation to have an icecube maker, because they use a lot of energy. A typical household in US uses around 11.000 kWh per year, my household in Denmark used 1740 kWh last year, just as a comparison, lot of households in Denmark uses less (some ofc uses more), so when you add an "american" fridge, it would increase my energy bill by 25% (390-450 kWh), just to get icecubes :) and then there is the whole plumbing that has to be up to danish code, added to the insurance etc. Not going to happen, hehe
Wow, Maya! Very very mature (and beautiful!) and shout out to you and your family, embrazing Denmark so well, I do hope we do everything to make you feel at home here!! Thanks for your videos :D
Denmark is the best place to live
Hope you all are doing well, it's been a while.
We are all good! Hope to have some video content up soon, in the meantime we are all excited about Maya finishing gymnasium!
you are right john is not a "danish" name, but it is from when denmark and england was "mixing it up" and is from an older name common in that time also in denmark, so i know what you think as americans, but no you are not the center of the world ;)
For some Danes it doesn’t make sense to have a car if you live and work in the city.
When he said "tin things" I knew I was in the wrong place lol.😂
Very often only the cheapest American homes have you walking directly into the home. Kinda like a mobile home, right?
You guys have a nice bar !
I'm American, lived here in Denmark since 1972 a young single mom hippie. I've taught refugees and immigrants, I know what it's like to ĺearn Danish and the Danish culture!I I am very sad to see the way the society has become 😢 If you are near North Djursland, you are welcome! We have 2 double guest rooms and bath!
As our guests of couse❤
I wouldn't want to change any of the differences. That would be really boring ❤😊
Copenhagen by car is a mess!
Stort tillykke, Maya!! I've got 3 kids, all are students (actually 2 have allready finished their University Degrees, last one is dragging his feet, studying medicin in Aarhus University) Congratulations to your parents too!!!! Knus
It’s very dangerous to be a white person in America
Your uncle needs to do stand-up, or something. 🤣
Your uncle is Danish? Or maybe English? "The sarcasm is strong with this one"! Nice! 😂 Your mother is lovely as always.
It hurt me, watching it. I hope for a speedy recovery.
Make your mom move back to Denmark!!! 🤩
The smørrebrød looks quite good as well. Wonderful parents. Love them.
Årrrhhhhh... Hvor er i fantastiske. Pardon my danish. 🥰 Loved this video. I'm glad your parents seem to have had a good time in Denmark. 😎
Can't know what you don't know.. That is usually the favourite pastime, to point out the mistakes of others. So you must be integrating very well
How are you getting on with the language guys ?
I thought the 5 things you didn’t like were weak. There are huge stores in Denmark - not sure where you are but hyperstores are there in the country
Why would you want huge hedges , they are wonderful for wildlife - you don’t need fences and walls between people. Why do you not want to be healthy eating fish - learn to like it for your health.lol
